This photograph of a Maori girl dressed in the traditional costume of her race, shows many interesting features. The white tipped huia feather in her hair denotes high rank: the greenstone tiki worn round the neck is a prized heirloom. In by-gone days the hard jade-like stone took many years to carve and polish. Her bodiee shows the colourful taniko weaving a distinctive maori art. The skirt or "piu piu" is made of native flax. |
