ILLINOIS CENTRAL STATION, CHICAGO
Central Station at 12th Street and Michigan
Boulevard-a Chicago landmark since 1893.
Ground was first broken on June 4, 1892, and the
building opened to public April 17, 1893. It now
serves three major roads: the Illinois Central,
Michigan Central and the Big 4 Route, all com-
pletely electrified within the city's limits, and
each an important thread in a vast, orderly net-
work of rail lines that makes Chicago the trans-
portation center of the world.
In the background on the lake front are the Field
Museum and Soldiers Field, newer monuments to
Chicago's greatness and advancement.
