First Issue Location: Cleveland, Ohio
Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1869, Harvey Cushing re-
ceived his M.D. from Harvard University. His dedication
to medical techniques led to the founding of neuro-
surgery. His brilliant work is even today considered
fundamental to the fields of brain and spinal cord surgery.
And, his important contributions to the understanding of
the pituitary gland led to the discovery of “Cushing's
Syndrome." Cushing eagerly shared his knowledge with
colleagues, and throughout his career, contributed
greatly to the training of young surgeons. In 1931, the
Harvey Cushing Society was formed to effect a contact
among medical colleagues for the free exchange of ideas.
In 1965, that Society became the spokesman for neuro-
surgery in the United States, and is today known as the
American Association of Neurological Surgeons. The
for his many contributions to the medical profession, and
to American society.
