First day if issue: June 17, 1988 First issue location: Cleveland, Ohio Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1869, Harvey Cushing received his MD from Harvard University. His dedication to medical techniques led to the founding of neurosurgery. His brilliant work is even today considered fundamental to the fields of brain and spinal cord surgery. And, his important contributions to the understanding of the pituitary gland led to the discovery of "Chushing's Syndrome." Cushing eagerly shared his knowledge with colleagues, and through his career, contributed greatly to the training of young surgeons. In 1931, the Harvey Cushing Society was formed to effect a contact among medical colleagues for the free exchange of ideas. In 1965, that Society became the spokesman for neurosurgery in the United States, and is today known as the American Society of Neurological Surgeons. The stamp on this Maximum Card honors Dr. Harvey Cushing for his many contributions to the medical profession, and to American society
