Hopi Basket Dance

The Basket Dance is a nine day ceremony conducted by a women's order known as "Lalkonti." It is held in September in even years at Oraibi, the westernmost of the Hopi villages. After the ceremonial foot race, which forms such an interesting part of all Hopi ceremonies, two women, dressed in elaborate ceremonial costume, play a game with small rings and darts and cast basket trays to the spectators. At the conclusion of the performance the women gather in a circle where they perform a dance accompanied by singing and waving of basket trays in their hands
