Where the Allegheny and Monongahela form the Ohio River. Pittsburgh's business section between the Allegheny River (left) and the Monongahela River (right), forming the Ohio River in the lower left hand corner of the picture. On the extreme point of land was located the French fort Duquesne which was captured by the British and Colonial forces after being fired by the retreating French. Fort Pitt was constructed at the scene and the location named Pittsburgh in honor of William Pitt. "Pittsburgh promotes progress".
