Langley Air Force base serves as headquarters for the U.S.A.F. Tactical
Air Command. The base was established in 1917 as an experimental
station and named for Samuel Pierpont Langley, an American air
pioneer. Since 1935 the base has been the center of tactical air units
that support ground forces.
