ATASCADERO, CALIFORNIA
The area of Atascadero was once occupied by great
herds of deer, antelope, and wild horses. However, by
1890 the plain and hills had become private property
with many prosperous ranchers. Atascadero (Sp.,
bog) is rimmed by wooded hills, was conceived in
1913 as a model community, designed on paper to
conform to uniform architectual standards and laid
out on a scale large enough to accommodate a
metropolis. The lots were large so that residences
were never close together. When the enterprise failed
its great civic center became a school later to become
a civic center again..M.P.
