MANITOU CAVE
FORT PAYNE, ALABAMA
250,000,000 years ago Mother Nature started construction
of Manitou Cave as a home and shelter for the caveman and
Indian. The dimensions of this home are ceilings from 9 to
90 feet high, 100 foot rooms connected by smooth and dry
majestic hallways, and no narrow passages. The walls, floor
and ceiling are decorated by beautiful stalagmites and stalac-
tites of all shapes and sizes, one of which is a giant stalagmite
40' high and 30' across called "The Haystack" and estimated
to be 184,000,000 years in the making. To this home man has
added 65,000 watts of beautiful indirect lighting, steel hand-
rails and bridges to guarantee a safe non-strenuous tour for
all ages.
Manitou Cave is conveniently located within the city limits
of Fort Payne, Ala., at the foot of historic Lookout Mountain
just 6 blocks off U.S. 11 or 1 mile from Interstate | 59. Fort
Payne, formerly known as Willstown in the early 1800's, is
the home of Sequoyah, the greatest of all the Cherokee Indians.
For his invention of the Cherokee alphabet in 1821, he
received recognition as the only Indian ever represented in
the National Hall of Statuary.
Tours by courteous, informative guides leave every 15
minutes to view this great masterpiece of Nature. Manitou
Cave has been recognized by several national publications and
rates as one of the major caves in the South. Each year
thousands of guests acclaim this 45 min. tour to be a
highlight of their vacation.
