BLACK HAWK STATUE, at Eagle's Nest Bluff in
Lowden State Park, one mile north of Oregon,
Illinois. This statue, as conceived and completed
by Lorado Taft the famous sculptor, represents
an idealization of the Indian American who
once enjoyed the Rock River Valley as their own
and left it in sorrow. The figure, commonly
called Black Hawk, stands 48 feet in height and
stands 300 feet above the bed of the Rock River.
Used in the construction was 268 tons of cement.
Lorado Taft built it on this site with little help
beyond his own resources. Governor Lowden
dedicated the statue July 4, 1911 and in 1944
it became the property of the State of Illinois.
