EPISCOPAL CHURCH, WINCHESTER, VA. This church dates
to 1740 or 1742, when the Church of England, then the established
church in Virginia, built a log chapel at the corner of Main and
Water Streets, as provided by Lord Fairfax. It was the first house
of worship in Winchester, was supported by taxation, and periodic
attendance was required of all adults. In 1764 a stone structure
replaced the log house, and in this Lord Fairfax was buried. In
1828 the property was sold, and the present edifice erected at Wash-
ington and Water Streets. The remains of Lord Fairfax were te-
interred under the chancel, which is marked by a memorial tablet.
