FREDERICK COUNTY COURT HOUSE, WINCHESTER, VA.
This stately building, typical of the old-time seat of local govern-
ment in Virginia, was erected in 1840. It occupies nearly the same
spot as the first Court House, built 1745-51 by Colonel James Wood,
first County Clerk, on land dedicated to the public use by Thomas
Lord Fairfax. The original building was about forty feet square
and was constructed of logs dovetailed at the ends.
