ENTER of the Golden Empire Centennial of 1939, Sutter's
Fort in Sacramento city was founded in 1839 by Capt.
John A. Sutter. Christened New Helvetia, the site soon be-
came a junction point for traders and travelers. The fort
has been completely preserved and during the period of the
Centennial celebration is being manned by colorfully garbed
custodians.
