The first wharf was built in 1845 at a cost of $8,000 by
Thomas O. Larkin. The present pier was built in 1870,
the city of Monterey raised funds for the purpose of
leasing it to individuals. It was in one of the fine res-
taurants, that line the pier, that the addition of abalone
to the modern menu was made popular. Today curio
shops, fish markets, restaurants and shops line the pier
