EL PASO COUNTY'S
FIRST COURT HOUSE
San Elizario, Texas
Once a Spanish stronghold, it was later
the seat of and the most important
town in El Paso County. A few squat
adobes and the Capilla de San Elizario,
the graceful simple chapel of the an-
cient Spanish fortress, are grouped about
the old plaza. Established following the
Pueblo revolt in New Mexico (1860) by
Indian refugees and Spanish soldiers, it
was a presidio town with a chapel, rather
than a mission settlement.
