COURTHOUSE-AUBURN
Auburn has been the county seat of Placer county since it
was organized in 1851 from parts of Sutter and Yuba coun-
ties. Below the hill, behind the court house, is the old part
of town. The name, Placer, is an old Spanish word, the
origin of which has never been satisfactorily explained, but
which came to be applied in Spanish countries to surface
mining. At the time the name was adopted for this county,
placer mining was the principal method employed there, and
the placers of the region were among the richest in the
state . . . M.P.
