FAMOUS JEFFERSON COUNTY COURT HOUSE
WHERE JOHN BROWN WAS TRIED AND
SENTENCED-CHARLES TOWN, W. VA.
In this courthouse on Dec. 2, 1864 John Brown
was sentenced to be hanged for his treasonous
raid on the arsenal in Harpers Ferry. The court-
house stands on land given by Charles Washing-
ton, the brother of George Washington, after
whom the city was named.
