COLLETON COUNTY COURTHOUSE WALTERBORO, S. C.
Building believed to have been designed by Robert Mills.
The county was settled in the early eighteenth century
by rice planters. Walterboro was first named ireland
Creek, but two citizens, Walter and Smith, each insisted
the town be named for him. Dispute ended by a tree-
felling contest won by Walter.
