NEW MADRID COUNTY COURTHOUSE, New Madrid, Mo.
New Madrid was the first American town in Missouri. It
was founded in 1789 . . . practically destroyed by earth-
quake 1811-12... A Catholic Church was founded 1789,
A Methodist Church in 1810... It was a very strategic
position during the "Bootheel" campaign of the Civil War
nearby is the Island No. 10 location and the Belmont
Battlefield famous in the Civil War History. This city was
captured by the Union forces in 1862.
