Deschutes County covers 3,041 square miles in
the geographic center of Oregon. It was formed
from part of Crook County on December 3,
1916 and named for Deschutes River (French,
meaning River of the Falls) which traverses the
county. Principal industries are lumber and lum-
ber re-manufacture, agriculture, and livestock.
Here are vast Ponderosa Pine forests, hundreds
of miles of crystal clear streams, 240 alpine
lakes (scenery and trout fishing unsurpassed),
snow-capped peaks, gorges, lava flows, lava cast
forests, lava tunnels, and beautiful falls.
