THE ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION'S Y-12 PLANT AT OAK RIDGE, TENNESSEE is a sprawling complex of about 170 buildings. Y-12 was built during World War II to produce enriched uranium 235 by the electromagnetic method and the first production building began operation January 27, 1944.
