St. Francis Xavier Church, next door to the Clark
Memorial, was built 1828-36 to replace a log m
church that had stood close to Fort Sackville. Colonel
Hamilton agreed to Clark's surrender terms in
front of the first church. Named a basilica in 1970,
the present church is known as the "Old Cathedral."
