No. 153. THE GREAT DISMAL SWAMP. Lies
in the peninsula between the James River, of Virginia,
on the North, and the Albemarle Sound, of North Caro-
lina, on the South. It extends over a vast area of nearly
one thousand square miles, and is covered by a thick
stratum of spongy, vegetable soil, supported and aug-
mented by a luxurious growth of aquatic plants, brush-
wood and timber. Lake Drummond, in its center, is a
beautiful basin of clear water, oval in shape, three miles
wide and six miles long. (Other Dismal Swamp scenes,
Nos. 152 and 154.)
