No. 47. MONTICELLO. Near Charlottesville, Vir-
ginia. Home of Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declar-
ation of Independence, the statute of Virginia for religious
freedom, and Father of the University of Virginia. Gov-
ernor of Virginia, 1779 to 1781. Minister to France 1784
to 1789. Secretary of State during the administration of
George Washington. Vice President 1797 to 1801, and
President of the United States 1801 to 1809. Refused
re-election and retired from public life to Monticello on
March 4th, 1809, with a reputation for integrity and
statesmanship unsurpassed even by Washington. Died
at Monticello July 4th, 1826, in the 83d year of his age.
