No. 49. THE HERMITAGE. Near Nashville, Ten-
nessee, the home of Andrew Jackson "Old Hickory,'
seventh President of the United States; born on the
border of North and South Carolina, March 15, 1767 ;
began his military career at the age of thirteen, at the
battle of Hanging Rock. First congressman from the
State of Tennessee 1796-97, and United States Senator
1797-98. His life as a planter was disturbed by the War
of 1812. He was made a Major General, fought with
great distinction, and became, for all time, an American
hero of the country in general and of the Democratic
party in particular. Was appointed Governor of Florida
in 1821; United States Senator in 1823, and became Pres-
ident of the United States in 1828, and again in 1832.
Died at the Hermitage June 8th, 1845.
