No. 17. RUINS OF AMBLER HOUSE, JAMES-
TOWN ISLAND. A famous, picturesque and inter-
esting ruin at Jamestown, Virginia. Built on the site of
the residence of Sir Francis Wyatt, Governor of Virginia
from 1621 to 1626. It was burned at the time of Bacon's
Rebellion in 1676, again by Tarleton during the Revolu-
tionary War, a third time during the Civil War, and
finally in 1897.
