COURT HOUSE PLACERVILLE, CALIFORNIA
El Dorado County was one of the original twenty-
seven counties. The first county seat was Coloma
but moved to Placerville in 18 7. The Spanish
term El Dorado arose by the Indians of Peru and
Venezuela when they told of a king that was
covered with gold dust. The Indians pointed the
way to the Spanish, first one way, then another.
From this fable the white men went out on costly
and fruitless expeditions, all in the pursuit of the
phantom of El Dorado. The name El Dorado came
to be applied to regions where gold or other
precious metals were thought to be found . . .
