MCDONALD OBSERVATORY
DAVIS MOUNTAINS
McDonald Observatory was built in 1932 by
the University of Texas as the result of a be-
quest of William J. McDonald, an amateur as-
tronomer. Mount Locke was selected as the
location for the observatory because of the
clear air of the region, the distance from con-
centrations of artificial lights, the high ratio of
cloudless nights, and the dust- and radiation-
filtering growths of timber in the area. The
dome on the right has the 107 inch telescope
completed in 1969. The dome in foreground
has the 82 inch reflector completed in 1939.
