PRESIDENTS SAY
"WE COME IN FRIENDSHIP OR AMISTAD"
United States President Nixon and Mexico's
President Diaz Ordaz meet at Amistad with the
emblems of their respective countries in the
background. The emblems, some nine feet tall,
display both the Eagle and Serpent of Mexico
and the Eagle of the United States. The dam,
twelve miles upstream on the Rio Grande near
Del Rio, forms a lake covering some 84,000
acres, 85 miles long. The meeting was to dedi-
cate the Amistad Dam. At the end of the
dedication ceremony, the two heads of state
embraced warmly in the traditional Mexican
"abrazo".
