The Echo. This is not the famous echo who gained
such a reputation for courtesy by answering "Begorra,
grandly" to the shouts of "How d'ye do, Paddy Blake?"
but a less original spirit, a youth who stands at a regulary
well-known point in the ascent ready to blow the Alpen-
horn for a few pfennigs and the pleasure of the tourists
who wish to hear the manifold "wild echoes flying".

The Terror of the Alps. This fine and savage
bird, the Stone Eagle, is the natural and hereditary
enemy of the Chamois; but, like others of its tribe, he
will attack children, and in very severe weather will
even dash upon solitary Alpine travellers.

A Descent. When a dangerous snow ridge has to
be negotiated the three that usually make up a single
party, are roped together, thus: guide, tourist, guide.
The first guide is steadied by the two above, and when
he has reached a good foothold, there is little work for
the tourist and second guide to do, except follow in his
steps.

A Rescue Party. When a party of climbers goes
off to negotiate an ascent, they are timed at their hotels,
and should their return be much overdue a rescue party
of guides and villagers is sent after them with extra
ropes, lanterns, ice-axes, blankets, food, brandy and
even surgical appliances.

Edelweiss. This white velvety flower is the desire
of every tourist and the disaster of some, for it grows
in places so steep and difficult that even chamois-hunters
themselves are shy of seeking it. It does not grow on
the lower heights of the Alps but only at altitudes higher
than 5,000 to 7,000 feet and therefore its possession is
regarded as the "hall-mark" of an Alpine climber.
