Nelson's Blind Eye at Copenhagen, 1801. At the
critical moment of the action when neither side had won
any advantage, and the result seemed quite in the balance,
the signal lieutenant stepped up to Nelson and told him
that the Commander-in-chief (Sir Hyde Parker) was flying
the signal to discontinue action. Nelson replied, "Leave
off action, now damn me if I do," and turning to the captain
said, "You know, Foley, I have only one eye, I have a
right to be blind sometimes," and putting the glass to his
blind eye exclaimed, "I really do not see the signal!
