Malta was held by the Knights of St. John from 1530
to 1798. In the latter year, Napoleon Buonaparte made
himself master of the place, and left Vaubois in charge.
In three months the Maltese revolted, and, with the
assistance of Portugal, Naples, and a small British force,
besieged Vaubois in Valetta for two years. On September
4th, 1800, the French surrendered, and the Maltese put
themselves under the protection of Great Britain.

Sydney (Australia). In 1770 Captain James Cook sailed
round New Zealand in the "Endeavour," and visiting the
eastern coast of Australia took peaceable possession of a
large tract of country which he named New South Wales.
The first colonists-seven hundred and fifty-seven con-
victs arrived at Botany Bay in January, 1788. Sydney
the capital of New South Wales, was founded in the same
year by Captain L. Phillip the British officer who had
been commissioned to establish the penal settlement-
and was named after Viscount Sydney, then Secretary of
State for the Colonies,

Vancouver. Sir George Simpson, a native of Ross,
who emigrated from England in 1820, entered the service
of the Hudson Bay Company and devoted his whole
energy to forwarding their interests. In 1821 this Com-
pany was amalgamated with the North-west Company,
and Simpson was made Governor of the northern depart-
ment, known as Rupert's Land. The rise of British
Columbia was contemporary with his administration,
and he is justly considered one of the architects of the
present Canadian Dominion.

The town of Quebec was founded by
Champlain, the French governor of Quebec, in July, 1608.
It was the centre of French trade and civilisation, until
the conquest by Wolfe at the memorable battle of Quebec
in 1759. In the year 1629 the town was besieged by an
English fleet under Admiral Kirke, surrendered, and
Champlain was taken, a prisoner, to England. He
returned, however, four years later, and remained
governor of the province until 1635, when he died.
Quebec was finally ceded to Great Britain by the Treaty
of Paris, 1763.

The Gold Coast. The Gold Coast, now a British
Colony and Protectorate, was once in the hands of the
Portuguese and the Dutch, who, settling there in the
days before England was a sea-going power of import-
ance, built forts and began a search for gold. In 1664,
however, the English successfully attacked the Dutch
defences, and four years later "the new five pieces of
gold coined by the Guiny Company" were issued. In
1844 the jurisdiction of England on the Gold Coast was
defined.

The Indian Empire. In 1599 the Dutch who controlled
the East India trade raised the price of pepper from 3/-
to 6/- and 8/- per lb. To combat the Dutch monopoly a
combination of London merchants induced Queen
Elizabeth to send an ambassador to obtain privileges for
trading direct from the Great Mogul, which resulted in
the formation of the East India Company and gåve
England her first foothold in India.

Acquisition of Newfoundland. In 1577 Gilbert, a
typical Elizabethan soldier of enterprise, set forth a
discourse "How her Majesty might annoy the King of
Spain by fitting out a fleet of war ships under pretence
of a voyage of discovery, and so fall upon the enemy's
shipping and destroy his trade in Newfoundland and
the West Indies, and possess both regions." Despite
endless difficulties, on Monday, August 5th, 1583, he took
possession, in the Queen's name, of the harbour of
St. John, thus founding our oldest colony.
