Sherborne. On two separate occasions did Queen
Elizabeth make a royal tour through the county of
Gloucestershire. Travelling in great state, with an army
of courtiers, retainers and servants, her progress through
the county was one series of entertainments and rejoicings.
Sudeley Castle (then the home of the powerful Baron
Chandos of Sudeley) and Sherborne House (the residence
of the Dutton family) are among other places associated
with these festivities.

The Battle of Tewkesbury was one of the most event-
ful episodes of the famous "Wars of the Roses." It was
fought at Tewkesbury, on the banks of the Severn, on the
4th May, 1471, and the Lancastrian troops, hastily raised
by Queen Margaret on her march through Dorset, Somer-
set and Gloucester, were totally defeated by the Yorkists,
under Edward IV. Both Margaret and her son were taken
prisoners. The picture represents the flight of the Queen.

Caractacus, or Caradoc, a son of Cunobelin, was a king of
the Britons from A.D. 43-50. He conducted a spirited defence
against the Roman invaders, but was finally compelled to
seek refuge with the Brigantes, whose queen, Cartismandua,
treacherously surrendered him to the Romans. He was
taken to Rome and figured prominently in the "triumph
of the victorious Emperor Claudius (A.D. 51).

Anselm was one of the most prominent figures in the
ecclesiastical history of England during the 11th century.
He was born at Aosta in Piedmont in 1033; became
Prior of Bec in 1078. Lanfranc had meantime become
Archbishop of Canterbury and died in 1089 After four
years' lapse, during which William II. appropriated the
revenues of the diocese, in a fit of remorse during a severe
illness, the ki g virtually forced Anselm to accept the
archiepiscopal staff, which he ably wielded until his death
in 1109.

Saxon Slave Market. Although nominally illegal both
before and after the Conquest, slavery and its accompanying
brutalities were openly conducted in the western counties
of England until it was discontinued and abolished by
Wulfstan, Bishop of Worcester (1062 to 1095). Bristol was
one of the chief centres of this trade, which was principally
carried on with the adjacent Welsh peninsula. The picture
shows the unveiling of Britis, a beautiful captive Welsh
princess.

The Siege of Gloucester was one of the most stirring
episodes of the Great Rebellion of Charles I.'s reign. The
King invested the city on August 10th, 1643, the citizens
conducting a most spirited defence, until, in September,
the approach of a well-appointed army of 14,00c men under
the Earl of Essex, compelled the King to raise the siege,
and release the citizens, who flocked out in great numbers
to meet the relieving forces. This incident forms the basis
of the sixth episode of the Pageant.
