In A.D. 61 Boadicea, the Queen of the Iceni, led the
British in rebellion against the Romans, and reduced
London to ashes. The same fate befell Verulamium, but
Suetonius Paulinus returning from the west defeated the
British, and Boadicea, rather than be a prisoner, put an
end to her life by poison. Her body was found by the
Romans, and placed and supported as if alive in her
chariot, and then driven through the Roman army.
