Football, in various forms, has been a popular amuse-
ment for many centuries. Both Romans and Greeks had a
game in which a ball was kicked, and the progress of the
sport can be traced clearly trom that time to the present
day. In the Middle Ages a favourite diversion was a
rough-and-tumble variation of the game, the field selected
being frequently the busiest street of the town or village,
and indeed this form of the game is not yet quite extinct.
