Throwing the Hammer is an invariable item on the
programme of a Scottish sports meeting. It is a sport
requiring not only considerable strength but also a good
amount of skill. Known in the Middle Ages as "casting
the barre," this sport among others was prohibited by
Edward III., as likely to discourage the practice of
archery, but was afterwards countenanced. Henry VIII.
was much devoted to this form of exercise and gave it
considerable encouragement.
