The Tournament was the military sport of the Middle
Ages, in which combatants engaged each other in the
manner shown in the picture, in order to exhibit their
courage and skill in the use of arms. The sports were
usually held in a specially prepared tilt-yard, and provided
entertainment for all classes of the community. A joust
was a single combat between two competitors.
