York Cathedral. Unequalled for dignity and gran-
deur, York Minster takes first place amongst the Cathe-
drals of England. A wooden Church occupied the site
in 627, and from then to 1080 when the present edifice
was begun, several churches were built and destroyed.
The greater part of the noble building of to-day was
built during 1154 and 1474, the Cathedral being re-
consecrated in 1472. The total length is 519 feet, and
the breadth of transept 223 feet. The Central Tower
is 198 feet high, and 65 feet square.

Winchester Cathedral. The history of this cathe-
dral is of legendary origin, Lucius, King of the Britons,
being supposed to have founded a Christian church
here in 164 A. D. Ethelwood built a church here in
980 of which fragments still remain, the present struc-
ture dating however from 1079. It is 556 feet long,

Rochester Cathedral. The site of Rochester
Cathedral has been occupied by a church since 604
A. D. when Augustine founded a see here.
struction of the present building was commenced in
1080 by Gundulph, but owing to many vicissitudes,
chiefly from fire, it was not completed until about 1280.
Many alterations have of course been carried out at
various dates, but goodly portions of the old building
still remain.
