Married 1855 Catherine Mumford whose name is held in remembrance as the Mother of the Salvation Army. Was first a Methodist minister, but in 1865, on Mile-End waste, started a 'Mission' from which has grown the mighty organization, the Salvation Army, whose force and activities now compass the Wide World."
