WHIRLPOOL RAPIDS. In its onward flow to Lake
Ontario, from the Falls, the Niagara River has a descent of
334 feet. It dashes heedlessly on over rocks and islets with
fearful impetus, and is lashed into foam all the way to Lewiston.
Several daring adventurers have sacrificed their lives to win
fame and money by swimming the rapids and whirlpool. The
grounds around the whirlpool belong to the Deveaux College
(a school for orphan boys), and the proceeds from the admission
fees go to the fund for its support.
