In 1862, Gen. W. T.
NEGRO CABIN, CHICKASAW BATTLEFIELD,
NEAR VICKSBURG, MISS.
Sherman met a bloody repulse at Chickasaw, which, from its
commanding position on the Mississippi River, was called the
**Gibraltar of the Confederacy". In 1863, Gen. Grant in the
rear, and Admiral Porter with his fleet in front, began one of
the most famous sieges in history. It lasted forty-seven days
and nights, when Vicksburg surrendered July 4, 1863.
