This convent was founded in 1610 by a Roy-
al Decree of King Philip II of Spain. Sister
Catherine de Mendoza, at the age of ninety, came
from Spain for that purpose. It is one of the
oldest convents in the Western Hemisphere. It
now houses the Department of Public Works.
