Mississippi County courthouse was erected 1900.
The county is one of the most historic sections of
southeast Missouri. The county area is 411 square
miles and contains remains of some 350 prehistoric
Indian mounds. Charleston was laid out in 1837
and was first known as Matthews Prairie. It is a
fast growing trade city with its interests centering
around Shoe production, Agriculture and Livestock.
It contributes greatly to the progressive economy of
S.E. Missouri.
