BALBOA BAY
The present Balboa-Newport Bay has come a long
way from the late 1800s when James and Robert
McFadden built the first pier here so they could un-
load freight from their boat "Newport." The Santa
Ana and Newport Railroad was built to haul the
freight to Santa Ana, the rails went up through Costa
Mesa followed the present highway to a point on
South Main St. where it went to Santa Ana. The wide
spot at the end of Newport pier was where the en-
gines turned around. The area has grown until today
it is a resort town with thousands of boats, homes
that overlook the bay and Pacific Ocean. Fine shops
are found that sell products from all over the world.
