Windsor Birthplace of Vermont
Delegates from those towns of the New Hamp-
shire grants west of Connecticut River met at
this house and here on July 8,1777 in convention
assembled. Founded the free and independent
republic of Vermont. Adopted its constitution
and chose an interim governing council to serve
until the first elections were held in 1778. After
fourteen years of independence Vermont entered
the federal union in 1791 as the 14th U.S. State.
