UNITED STATES OF
MONUMENTAL CHURCH (Episcopal) stands on
Broad Street, on what was formerly Academy Square. It was
built as a memorial and upon the site of the old Richmond
Theatre, destroyed by fire December 26th, 1811, at which time
about 60 persons, including Governor G. W. Smith of Virginia,
lost their lives; the crypt in the portico contains their ashes
and a record of their names.
