Portrait of J. S. Machar. Born February 29, 1864, in Kolín. Considered one of the most important and influential Czech poets of his time. Known for his realistic and socially engaged poetry and essays. Notable works include "Confiteor" (a trilogy from his younger years), "Sonnets of Magdalena", cyclical poems "From the World War", and war memoirs. Before the war, he served as Inspector General of the Army in Prague.
