CATALINA ISLAND, A ROMANTIC ADVENTURE
CATALINA ISLAND, CALIFORNIA
Catalina's "Airport in the Sky" was built in 1941 by
blasting away the tops of two adjacent mountains and
filling in the adjoining valley. Located at an elevation of
1,600 feet, the "Airport in the Sky" has a 3,250
blacktop runway. Due to the sharp drop from each end
of the runway the airport was used for aircraft carrier
landing practice during World War II. Today the "Air-
port in the Sky" is a favorite destination of mainland
flyers who enjoy the island's remote charm and a lunch
of buffalo burgers.
