Additional Details:
An aerial view of the "Airport in the Sky" on Catalina Island, showing the runway, surrounding terrain, and a small body of water. Catalina's "Airport in the Sky" was built in 1941 by blasting away the tops of two adjacent mountains and filling in the adjoining valley. Located at an elevation of 1,600 feet, the "Airport in the Sky" has a 3,250 foot blacktop runway. During World War II, aircraft carrier landing practice was done to the sharp drop from each end of the runway; the airport was used for troop aircraft. Airport in the Sky is a favorite destination of mainland flyers who enjoy the island's remote charm and a lunch of buffalo burgers.
