HURRICANE HUGO, CHARLESTON, SC, SEPTEMBER 21-22, 1989
Hurricane Hugo originated September 11, 1989 as a tropical
wave off the coast of Africa. Two days later it pounded Puer-
to Rico and the Caribbean Islands and headed straight for
the South Carolina coast. During the night and early morn-
ing hours of September 21 and 22, the 300 year old city of
Charleston, South Carolina, was forever changed by the 135
MPH winds that came ashore.
