Book cover for "Murder on the Appalachian Trail" by Jess Carr. The back cover has a summary of the book. News of the tragedy made national headlines and flashed across TV screens in the Spring of '81. Bob Mountford and Susan Ramsay, social workers from Maine, had been brutally murdered while hiking the historic Appalachian Trail. There was no apparent motive for the killings. The victims were strangers, engaged in a fund raising walkathon to benefit a retarded children's home. In one of the most extensive manhunts in Southern history, Randall Lee Smith, the killer, was found in hiding in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, but it would be fourteen months before the bizarre story of his life, and the twisted reasonings for his murders, unfolded.
