It was built in the 12th century by Raymond de Saint-Gilles, Count of Toulouse and one of the leaders of the First Crusade. The Citadel has been rebuilt and expanded several times over the centuries, and it now includes a mix of Crusader, Mamluk, and Ottoman architecture.
